Yannick Ackah

Born 1992 in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast Lives and works in Abidjan, Ivory Coast

The artist Yannick Ackah was born in Yamoussoukro, the political capital of Ivory Coast and grew up in Abidjan in the district of Abobo. Just recently graduated from École Superieur des Arts Plastique, d'Architecture et Design, the artist has an extraordinary talent. His works remind of a mix of Picasso and Basquiat.

For his compositions Ackah draws inspiration from everyday scenes and features from African culture, such as sculptures and masks. Characteristic for his painting are mixed media, collages, pastels and charcoal drawings. At the first glance his paintings seem to be light and dreamy, both in colors and subjects, though  as the viewer looks closer into the artworks, another layer of form and of meaning is revealed. Behind the pastel brushstrokes and bright lines one identifies darker, deeper images that create the surreal mood of his paintings. The employment of cut-outs, the depiction of fragments,  the somewhat messy forms and figures highlight the disruptive component of the world, which the artist is interested in and which he finds in both everyday life and in African culture.
