Yeanzi selected for the 59th Venice Art Biennale
The Hamburg Galerie Melbye-Konan is delighted to announce the participation of Yeanzi, the artist they represent, in this year's Biennale. Another milestone in the career of the exceptional artist from the Ivory Coast and internationally sought-after artist from Africa.
Ivorian artist Yeanzi has been selected to create this year's artistic contribution for Côte d'Ivoire at the 59th Biennale Arte in Venice along with Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Abdoulaye Diarrassouba dit Aboudia, Armand Boua, Saint-Etienne Yéanzi dit Yeanzi, Laetitia Ky, Aron Demetz. The National Pavilion exhibition will be held at Magazzino del Sale 3 under the theme "The dreams of a story", curated by Henri Koffissé N'koumo, Massimo Scaringella and Alessandro Romanini.
Yeanzi has established himself as an internationally sought-after artist over the last 10 years and is one of the top 10 best-known contemporary artists in Africa (Artprice). His works are in international museums and collections and are exhibited internationally in Paris, Dubai, London and Hamburg, among other places.
Born in Katiola (Côte d'Ivoire) in 1988 and living in Bingerville, the artist graduated in 2012 at the top of his class at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Abidjan and has already won several art competitions (Nairay Grand Prix and Bene Hoane Prix). Since 2013, the Ivory Coast artist has been working with recycled plastic, which he melts and drips onto the surface to create human bodies and faces. The anonymity of his motifs, created from the uncontrolled process, challenges the established assumption of the portrait genre to capture the person portrayed and thus the individual in his identity. Thus, the questions of identity and the individual within the community, exposed to continuous social and identity ruptures, are at the forefront of his artistic work, but also the critical examination of environmental pollution caused by plastic.
The Venice Biennale , which has been held biennially since 1895 and is thus the oldest biennial, is one of the world's most important exhibitions of contemporary art. The theme of this year's Biennale Arte (23 April - 27 November 2022) is "The Milk of Dreams" curated by Cecilia Alemani. The motto "describes a magical world where life is constantly seen through the prism of imagination and where everyone can change, transform, become something and someone else. The exhibition takes us on an imaginary journey through metamorphoses of the body and definitions of what it means to be human." In the exhibition, curator Cecilia Alemani questions big contemporary questions : "How does the definition of the human being change? What constitutes life and what distinguishes animals. Plants, humans and non-humans? "The focus is on three themes in particular: "the representation of bodies and their metamorphoses, the relationship between individuals and technologies and the connection between bodies and the earth."
