Art in the center

In Stella Melbye-Konan's gallery, artists and art lovers enter into a dialogue.

Mrs Melbye-Konan, what prompted you to set up your own gallery?
It was my passion for art, which has been with me since childhood, that prompted me to set up my own gallery. My studies in art history in Hamburg and Paris, coupled with professional experience at the Centre Pompidou and the Musée Carnavalet, have not only given me a sound knowledge of art. During my work in renowned museums, I developed a concrete desire not only to promote established artists whose works are already worth millions, but also to start much earlier in the creative process: in the discovery and promotion of up-and-coming, as yet unknown talents. My gallery offers precisely this platform to support artists at the beginning of their career and pave their way into the international art market.

Why did you choose the Apartimentum location in Harvestehude?
Harvestehude is known for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, which fits perfectly with the philosophy of my gallery. The Apartimentum offers the ideal setting for curating a visionary exhibition programme. On 400 square metres of light-flooded space with five-metre-high ceilings, we have the opportunity to realise museum-quality exhibitions and present large-format works of art. In addition, the extraordinary location offers enough space for a varied supporting programme, ranging from artist talks and lectures to exclusive events and art dinners.

How do you select the artists you exhibit?
I rely on my intuition to discover the talents of tomorrow. I specifically look for artists who have the courage to break new ground and realise visionary ideas. I am particularly interested in works that are not only at the highest level of craftsmanship, but also have a deeper emotional or intellectual impact on the viewer. Innovation and originality are essential criteria for me.

Do you have a favourite art form?
Our focus is on promoting art that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also conveys a socially relevant message. We support emerging artists whose works have the potential to make a lasting impact on the art world.

In 2025, Stella Melbye-Konan's gallery will bring major exhibitions by international artists to Hamburg. The exhibition ‘Alchemy’ by London-based artist Belén runs until mid-February. In spring, the focus will be on a solo exhibition by Yannick Ackah, one of the most sought-after international artists of his generation. The summer will be enriched by an exciting group exhibition.
